Enhancing Search and Rescue Services in Western Africa

Posted in News

IMO is supporting countries in western Africa to enhance their national search and rescue (SAR) services with a regional training course and meeting taking place in Lagos, Nigeria late in 2016.

The activities are assisting Member States under the 'Nigeria SAR Region' (Benin, Cameroon, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe) to develop their regional SAR Plan and to increase regional cooperation.

The training course (21-23 November 2016) covered the duties of search and rescue 'On-Scene Coordinators', which was followed by the third meeting of the regional SAR Coordinating Committee.

The activities were organized in collaboration with the International Maritime Rescue Federation and hosted by the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency.

IMO was represented by Captain Dallas Laryea and Mr Honorat Hoba.
