Michael is well known as the IMRF's Chairman of Trustees.

He retired as the Operations Director of the RNLI in July 2013 after 39 years of service.

Michael, who is a Master Mariner, was mainly responsible for changing the RNLI from being a traditional lifeboat service to a world class lifesaving service following the introduction of beach lifeguards, flood rescue operations and prevention and education programmes to reduce the increasing number of incidents being dealt with. He was first elected Chairman of the IMRF Trustees in 2007.
