Shark-A Lifeboat Design Assurance Tool

Project SHARK

Project Safety, HAZOP, Assurance between the RNLI and KNRM (SHARK) was set up in 2014 and includes staff members from the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution), and the KNRM (Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij).

The team has delivered a process that can be followed to provide assurance and design verification of lifeboats that typically fall outside of most codes of practice and regulations.

It provides a framework that can be used within an organisation in the first instance that can then be cross checked by a third party, e.g. another Lifeboat Rescue Organisation (e.g. members of the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF)) or Statutory Authority.

The process incorporates the following:

•   Flowchart – This guides the user through the whole process.
• A semi-automated Design Assurance Tool (SHARK-DAT).
• Reporting Tool – To collate the data inputted in the SHARK-DAT.
• SHARK-DAT Supporting Documentation – Provides information and explanations of the overall process and some of the underlying assumptions.

This is supported by 'E-learning' that is in the form of an .html file providing visual and audible guidance on the use of the SHARK-DAT tool.
