About Gambia SAR System Organisation

The National Search and Rescue Commission is responsible for ensuring a coordinated and effective aeronautical and maritime SAR operations within the Gambia. The commission directs the maritime and aeronautical search and rescue policy, enter into international agreements, convention and operational matters pertaining to SAR.

The Gambia National Search and Rescue Commission (GNSARC) as the Search and Coordinating Committee (SCC) coordinates, liaises, trains, equips, staff, maintains, prepares finance, develops procedures and operational plans and conduct exercises jointly for maritime and aeronautical SAR. The commission within its means and capabilities, coordinates its resources to SAR operations and ensures the coordination between the relevant aeronautical and maritime authorities to provide for the most effective and efficient search and rescue operations.

The Gambia (/ˈɡæmbiə/ (About this soundlisten)), officially the Republic of the Gambia, is a country in West Africa that is almost entirely surrounded by Senegal with the exception of its western coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. It is the smallest country within mainland Africa.[6]

The Gambia is situated on either side of the Gambia River, the nation's namesake, which flows through the centre of the Gambia and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Its area is 10,689 square kilometres (4,127 sq mi) with a population of 1,857,181 as of the April 2013 census. Banjul is the Gambian capital and the largest cities are Serekunda and Brikama.
