The IMRF's #FutureSAR initiative identifies the key challenges the global maritime search and rescue (SAR) industry will face due to climate change and proposes guidance and best practices to aid rescue operations in the future. As part of this, we spoke with Matthew Fader, International Search and Rescue Development Manager at the Swedish Sea Rescue Society (SSRS), to get his insight into climate change and how it is impacting SSRS’s  SAR operations.

Matthew said there is a change in weather patterns worldwide, and that with more intense storms it is a delicate balancing act between implementing green fuels and other initiatives without sacrificing the safety of the crew and the people in distress. However, there are solutions that can be implemented, for example using a boat that is no larger than required to respond to each SAR incident.
