Mass Rescue Operations

Mass Rescue Operations, or MROs, are defined as the need for immediate response to large numbers of persons in distress such that the capabilities normally available to the search and rescue authorities are inadequate. Filling this capability gap is vital if SAR organisations are going to able to respond to an MRO effectively.

The IMRF is committed to providing comprehensive guidance for maritime SAR organisations in order to be best prepared for MROs. You can find more information on our range of resources here.

As part of our drive to provide critical information to maritime SAR organisations, we have produced two podcasts with Tom Gorgol, Mass Rescue Programme Manager at the US Coast Guard, and David Jardine Smith, the IMRF’s former MRO Project Manager.

IMRF MRO Podcast #1

In this podcast, Tom Gorgol, Mass Rescue Programme Manager at the US Coast Guard, and David Jardine Smith, the IMRF’s former MRO Project Manager, look at the biggest challenges in mass rescue operations and how to mitigate those challenges.

IMRF MRO Podcast #2
In this podcast, Tom Gorgol, Mass Rescue Programme Manager at the US Coast Guard, and David Jardine Smith, the IMRF’s former MRO Project Manager, discuss some of cultural barriers involved with MROs and how to manage them, particularly when it comes to once-in-a-lifetime event. In addition, Tom and Dave also talk about the involvement of major industry players in shore-side response to MROs.
