The H.E.R.O. Awards are not just about recognising the practical side of a rescue. They are about recognising all those involved in saving lives at sea through innovative equipment, personal commitment and organisational capability and today’s story looks at how technology can save lives.

Marine Rescue NSW (MRNSW) is the official volunteer marine rescue service of Australia’s most populous state with over 3,000 volunteers and 45 rescue units.

MRNSW has worked hard to develop its own custom-designed suite of integrated vessel tracking and monitoring technology. They have developed the web-based Seahawk vessel tracking system and a companion Marine Rescue App, which is free. This App delivers a specific safety tool directly into the boater’s hand, encouraging them to accept responsibility for making safety their priority.

This has revolutionised MRNSW’s work to help keep boaters safe on NSW waters and modernise the work of their volunteers and we are delighted that they have made it to the 2016 H.E.R.O. Awards Shortlist.
