Crew Exchange Lifeboat Crew Exchange Overview Since its inception in 2012, the IMRF Lifeboat Crew Exchange has been a unique and invaluable opportunity for maritime search and rescue (SAR) professionals worldwide to come together, collaborate, and learn. Originally involving eight countries, this annual event was temporarily paused during the Covid pandemic (2020–2022) but was successfully relaunched in 2023, continuing its mission to strengthen international SAR efforts. The Lifeboat Crew Exchange is a week-long event in September each year. It brings together crew members from host countries like Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, as well as visiting participants from other countries. Hundreds of individuals contribute to this multi-country event, making it a rich, immersive experience for all involved. Participants engage in practical exercises, including navigation, firefighting, Mass Rescue Operations, and person recovery, as well as visits to lifeboat stations and Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCCs). This program offers hands-on training, challenging scenarios, and a chance to exchange insights into different rescue techniques, operational methods, and specialised equipment. Through this immersive experience, crew members gain valuable skills to bring back to their local stations, enhancing their SAR capabilities and strengthening their communities. The programme strongly emphasises collaboration, allowing participants to build professional networks, forge lasting friendships, and share experiences with like-minded peers from diverse SAR organisations. As Lawrie McMillan from the RNLI in the UK noted, "The Crew Exchange is a brilliant way to see a country and understand how it uses rescue methods, coordination, and training." For many participants, the cultural exchange and the opportunity to connect with other SAR professionals is a highlight of the event, creating bonds that extend beyond borders. IMRF’s Lifeboat Crew Exchange has consistently proven to be a motivating and inspiring experience that fosters knowledge sharing and best practices across the SAR community. “It allows us to compare equipment, methods, and learn from the international world of sea rescue,” says Sylvain Moynault, local exchange coordinator for SNSM in France. If your organisation is interested in joining the exchange, please reach out to us. We also reserve limited spaces for organisations from Europe and beyond that may not be able to host exchange crews but are interested in sending members to participate. Planning for the exchange begins in January each year, so if you’d like to take part, contact Jaakko Heikkilä at [email protected] for further details. The programme is open to IMRF member organisations. If your organisation is not a member yet, you can join the IMRF here. The Lifeboat Crew Exchange continues to advance global SAR skills, foster partnerships, and bring together a community of maritime rescuers committed to saving lives. Don’t miss this chance to strengthen your SAR expertise, forge meaningful connections, and make a positive impact on the international SAR community. Manage Cookie Preferences
