IMRF Awards 2024

South Africa’s National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has developed a unique swimming facility within a 12 m shipping container that enables children to be taught, for free, how to swim in a safe and practical environment, thus reducing the risk of a child drowning in the region.

By teaching children to swim for free in a safe space that is secure both during lessons and after hours, the NSRI hopes to reduce the terrible drowning statistics in the country, which show that approximately 1,450 people drown each year in South Africa.
